- 赫芬顿邮报:Terrific 3D quality of SuperD

I came across another company making glassless 3D, a Chinese group called SuperD. It's only for tablets and SmartPhones, though, unlike the oft-mentioned here Stream TV Networks which is making its Ultra-D technology for licensing to television (with tablets et al in the works). The 3D quality of Super D was terrific. A few caveats must be mentioned though. It uses an optical sensor to adjust to the person viewing. That means it's only for one person viewing at a time, and if you switch to another viewer takes a bit to readjust. (引自《赫芬顿邮报》)

SuperD's 3D display collapses into the size of a notebook and projects a surprisingly compelling picture before your eyes.

LAS VEGAS—I tried Snail Games' W 3D gaming smartphone at CES 2015 earlier this week, and experienced a new form of glasses-free 3D that uses a camera to track your eyes and adjust the picture accordingly. That technology is driven by a company called SuperD, which demonstrated other glasses-free 3D devices at the show. Flat screens that can produce 3D pictures to the naked eye are fine, but SuperD is looking at other, more interesting applications.

Now I've also tried out a stand-alone glasses-free 3D display concept SuperD demonstrated, and it offered the closest experience I could find to having my own pocket hologram. It's a pop-up display that uses a transparent panel, an LCD, and a camera to make a 3D picture that seems to float in its monitor-sized clamshell case. This sort of optical illusion has been used for decades (like in the hologram arcade game Time Traveler), but SuperD added its own notable twist to the display to produce a fully 3D picture instead of just a floating 2D picture.

SuperD's big glasses-free 3D trick is the use of a front-facing camera to track the user's eye positions and adjust the filter that separates the two halves of a stereoscopic 3D picture accordingly. This worked fairly well when I tried Snail Games' W 3D phone, but adding the reflected hologram angle to the idea really made the picture pop out.

Like on the W 3D, the display concept showed my own face in the corner of the screen and indicated where it sensed my eyes, adjusting the 3D demo video (in this case, the original Tomb Raider game) to show the appropriate picture to both of my eyes. The transparent panel through which the picture was reflected brought out the 3D picture further, even if the only thing behind the picture was the plastic of the pop-up case. It's a tiny, simple illusion that takes this complicated 3D technology and really makes it striking.

SuperD also showed off a mock-up arcade cabinet that used the glasses-free 3D display for a racing game with a steering wheel and pedals. It also was immersive, and once I got used to the view, the car really seemed to pop out in front of me.

Of course, a tech demo doesn't mean a product will work for consumers. While the display concept looked cool it also isn't anywhere near finding a retail release. Conventional, flat glasses-free 3D displays using SuperD's eye-tracking technology are coming to mobile devices like the W 3D and the InFocus M550, but the pop-up display is currently only a proof-of-concept.(引自《PC Magazine》)
